On your own, against up to three CPU riders. Easy brakes early for every corner; Hard holds full throttle and boosts down the straights — beat it by drifting to fill your own boost and spending it.

Create a room to race
You get a code to share with whoever is on your Wi-Fi. The lights start on their own once a second rider arrives, or press start to go out alone. Empty slots can be filled with CPU riders when the lights go.

- Cutting the corner does not help — the lap only counts if you go round.
How the race works
Up to 4 riders over 3 laps, on bikes rather than on foot — a different control set entirely, with a handbrake where the jump key is. Drifting fills the boost meter, which means the tidy line and the fast line are not the same line and a race is decided by how much you are willing to throw the bike around.
Every track shares one footprint. That sounds like a shortcut and it is the opposite: lap counting, sector timing, the grid slots and the steering assist are all written against that one shape, so the room server counts a lap the same way whichever track is running and a new track cannot quietly break any of them. What the tracks change is elevation. Neon Circuit is flat and railed; Vapor Ridge is the same loop on stilts with a hill and a crest that throws you off the back straight if you take it at speed.
Laps are counted by the server, not by your browser. The track is divided into sectors and you have to pass through them in order, which is why cutting a corner gains you nothing — a lap with a sector missing is not a lap.
A race needs a room server to stay resident, so it is the one mode that can fail to connect. If it has been quiet for a while the first join wakes the server, which takes a moment; the loading screen says so rather than spinning silently.
