Harbour Steps

Tutorial course

A causeway out, a climb, and a long shelf home. Nothing to fall off.

What it is

Harbour Steps is the widest of the tutorial courses and the one with the least to fall off: the route is a causeway, a climb, and a long shelf home, gaining 8 cells from start to finish. It is the course to send somebody who has never played a platformer.

The route

The causeway out is flat and deliberately slow — it is there so the first thing you do is run, not jump. The climb is single-cell steps, one after another, the gentlest rise the game has. The shelf home runs back across a 76-cell span, and the widest gap on the whole route is 3.5 cells. Nothing on the route descends at all.

How to approach it

Do not stop at the top of the climb. The shelf is a straight sprint and it is where the time is; the climb itself is nearly unimprovable.

What it teaches: Running speed, and that the clock rewards not stopping.

Controls

What you need to start

MoveWASDArrow keys work too.
JumpSpace
Sprint / lock onShiftA latch, not a hold: tap once to arm sprint and a camera lock-on together, tap again to release both. Neither carries over into the next world you open.

Sprint is a latch rather than a hold — tap it once and it stays on. Every control, keyboard and touch, including respawn, restart and the camera keys, and all of them rebindable.

Other Tutorial courses

  • Neon Run — A forgiving obstacle course. Stones, a walkway, floating islands.
  • Lantern Row — A lit street with one turn in it. The route is visible from the start.
  • Meadow Rise — A long climb to a summit, with two staircases to rest on.
